I hail from a family deeply rooted in medicine, with three generations of pathologists who have not only embraced the field but have also contributed significantly to its growth and practice. Medicine has been in my blood, and I’ve always been driven by a passion for understanding the complexities of disease and the science behind diagnosing them. This deep family connection to pathology shaped my path early on and inspired me to pursue this specialty with a commitment to excellence.

After completing my residency at NYU Long Island and fellowship at Moffitt Cancer Center, I found that my experiences in training further solidified my dedication to this intricate and critical field of pathology. The hands-on exposure, the rigorous training, and the chance to work with some of the best professionals in the field enhanced my skills in diagnostic pathology, molecular pathology, and laboratory management. The art of uncovering the hidden details within tissue samples and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to improve patient outcomes is something I truly cherish.

Throughout my time in New York, I gained invaluable insights into the evolving landscape of pathology and how advancements in technology are reshaping the field. While my experiences and growth in New York have been invaluable, my heart has always been set on returning to Vancouver, BC. My goal is to integrate cutting-edge advancements in pathology with a personalized approach to patient care, focusing on precision diagnostics, collaboration with clinicians, and ensuring that each case receives the attention it deserves.

Dr. Goffredo Arena graduated from Catania medical school (Italy) in 1997. He completed his Vascular Surgery Residency in 2003 and his General Surgery Residency at McMaster University (Canada) in 2007. He then moved to Montreal, where he completed back to back a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery and a fellowship in Hepatobiliary and Multiorgan Transplantation at McGill University. He joined McGill University as an Assistant Professor of Surgery in 2010 and was promoted to Associate Professor of Surgery in 2017.

Beside a very busy surgical practice, which has spanned from oncology surgery and minimally invasive surgery to transplant surgery, he has been heavily involved in academic teaching and basic science research. He has developed a new model to explain metastatic disease called Horizontal Transfer of Malignant Traits (HTMT) and he has invented a new cell line (BRCA1 Knocked-Out Fibroblasts) to study neoplastic diseases. He has developed a biological platform (Metastatic And Transforming Elements Released Discovery platform-MATERD) for early cancer screening and he has published on the application of Artificial Intelligence in liquid biopsy. He is currently practicing surgery in Italy and he is involved in bench side research whose aim is to understand the mechanisms behind the metastatic disease, to find new markers for liquid biopsy and to test new drugs to inhibit cancer vesicles uptake

Dr. Enfield is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UBC, and a Scientist in the Integrative Oncology department at the BC Cancer Research Institute (BCCRI). Dr. Enfield’s lab is located at BCCRI, embedded within the collaborative PRO-Lung research network of scientists and clinicians.

Dr. Enfield grew up in British Columbia and received her BSc in Microbiology from the University of Victoria. She then moved to Vancouver and completed her PhD at UBC under the supervision of Dr. Wan Lam, where she employed a multiomics approach to discover and characterize oncogenes and tumour suppressor genes in lung cancer. Dr. Enfield then undertook a postdoctoral fellowship at the Francis Crick Institute in London, UK, in Professor Charles Swanton’s Cancer Evolution and Genome Instability Lab. There, she studied the reciprocal relationships between cancer-intrinsic genomic alterations and the immune response in the TRACERx lung cancer study.

Dr. Enfield has expertise in highly multiplexed approaches for the spatial profiling of the lung tumour microenvironment and the integration of genomic and immunological data. Her lab utilizes these techniques to improve our understanding of the immune response to lung cancer and the reasons for success or failure of immunotherapies.
