For Supervisor and Student

FREQUENT QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

  • Q. I have a 4th year student who will be completing her/his BMLSc degree requirements this semester and won’t be registered as an undergraduate student in September.  Is she/he eligible for the Pathology Summer Student Research Program?
  • A.  The student must be enrolled at UBC at the time of application only.
  • Q. Am I allowed to put in another Summer Student Fellowship application for a different project and different Medical student?  Would this affect the chances of the first project being rejected and how many Fellowships they are expecting to give out this year?
  • A.  Each supervisor can only submit one project with one student.
  • Q. Do I need to have a candidate in mind to make an application?
  • A.  You have to apply with a candidate in mind. If you want to find a candidate, you can write a proposal and email the undergraduate medical school classes of years 1 and 2 by means of the medical undergraduate offices and then students can identify themselves to you. The application, in principle, is as much from the student as from the advisor.
  • Q.  Do I have to provide any of the funding?
  • A.   If you want to employ the student beyond the funding that the program provides, you will need to provide the additional funding.
  • Q.  Is it necessary for the student to be part of a larger project, which can partially or fully support the student?
  • A.   No – it can be part of a larger project or it can be a stand-alone project.
  • Q.   If I do not have alternative sources of funding will the application still be considered?
  • A.   Yes.
  • Q.   Would Dental students be considered for this research program or only medical students?
  • A.    Dental students are not eligible. There is a department of oral maxillofacial pathology associated with dentistry. You may wish to approach this department. The main purpose of our program is to encourage medical students to enter pathology residency and pursue pathology research when they finish their pathology training.
  • Q.   Can this application be used for medical or pathology educational research or is it solely for basic and clinical research?
  • A.   There is precedent for pathology educational research – specifically, Dr. Jason Ford has done this previously.
  • Q.  Can out-of-province medical or undergraduate students apply to this program?
  • A.   Only if the student is registered in a UBC medical undergraduate or Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Undergraduate Program.
  • Q.   Can out-of-country medical or undergraduate students apply to this program?
  • A.  Only if the student is registered in a UBC medical undergraduate or Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Undergraduate Program.
