The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is located at the University of British Columbia’s Point Grey campus. Laboratory and teaching space are located in the Koerner Pavilion of Vancouver Coastal Health UBC Hospital.
The Department offers the following educational programs: undergraduate – Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLSc); Graduate Studies in Experimental Pathology; Residency Training Program; Infection Prevention and Control Certificate; and Laboratory Quality Management Certificate. As well, the department administers The David Hardwick Pathology Learning Centre and The Office of Biobank Education and Research.
Departmental research is carried out by a number of resident faculty. However, our Department has sizeable holdings and a great deal of activity in all of the teaching hospitals in the UBC system; most graduate students are located in these centres. These include the Vancouver General Hospital, the B.C. Cancer Research Centre (including the Terry Fox Laboratory), St. Paul’s Hospital and the B.C. Children’s Hospital.
A wide range of specialized equipment is available within the Department due to the broadly distributed interests of the faculty. We also have an engineering design and shop facility that has designed and built experimental equipment from a gas chromatograph to hardware flown on the Space Shuttle.
