2026 Award Categories
There are eleven awards this year, recognizing everyone from first-year trainees to colleagues with a lifetime of service. Click Nominate to open the nomination form for that award. You are welcome to nominate in more than one category.
Every nomination must include a summary of the nominee’s outstanding accomplishments, to a maximum of 500 words. Nominations may also include one additional letter of support.
Excellence in Clinical Service
Distinction in enhancing patient care through laboratory services, including clinical innovation, quality assurance, and community outreach. One award for academic settings and university hospitals, one for community hospitals and rural settings.
EligibilityClinical faculty members within the department.
Excellence in Mentoring
Distinction in mentorship by faculty that has positively impacted faculty, staff, students, or trainees.
EligibilityClinical or academic faculty with appointments in the department.
Education Award
Outstanding contributions to education. One award for undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral education; one for resident and fellow education and continuing professional development.
EligibilityClinical and academic faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and residents.
Research and Discovery Award
Excellence in discovery, mechanistic, translational, clinical, or population research. One award for early-career faculty within seven years of appointment, one for mid- to senior-career faculty. Nominations should include the nominee’s h-index, publications, and grants held.
EligibilityTenure-track, tenured, or clinical faculty members engaged in research.
Suzanne Vercauteren Leadership Award
In honour of Suzanne Vercauteren’s leadership. For clinical faculty who demonstrate all-around excellence, leadership, innovative clinical service, and integrity and humanity.
EligibilityClinical faculty in a health authority or UBC leadership role.
David Hardwick Lifetime Achievement Award
Extraordinary members of the department who have had sustained, distinguished careers in research, teaching, and service. Candidates are selected from top-ranked individuals identified through the annual departmental merit review as well as by nomination.
EligibilityClinical and academic faculty members of the department.
Staff Service Award
Staff who demonstrate the ability to collaborate with others, consistently high-quality work, adaptability and resilience, and critical thinking. One award for administrative staff, one for technicians and technologists.
EligibilityDepartment employees at all sites, and other staff pivotal to the success of faculty members.
Most Valuable Player Award
Much like the sports MVP, for the individual who made the greatest contribution over the past year to the visibility, functioning, and overall success of the department, including through administrative and community service.
EligibilityAny member of the department.
Community Engagement and Philanthropy Award
Contributions toward engaging with the public and community at large, and philanthropic activities that benefit the department, faculty, or university.
EligibilityAny member of the department.
Dana Devine Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Award
In honour of the legacy of Dr. Dana Devine, an accomplished scientist, leader, and mentor who ensured everyone belonged and everyone thrived. For a member of the department with a sustained and effective commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion that has resulted in measurable outcomes.
EligibilityAny member of the department.
Trainee Awards
PALM trainees who contribute to the vitality and success of the program and department and excel in research or clinical care. One award each for an MSc student, a PhD student or candidate, and a post-doctoral fellow, fellow, or resident.
EligibilityGraduate students, post-doctoral fellows, clinical fellows, and residents.
