Lisa shares the experiences she had in the BMLSc program that still help her today in her career teaching veterinary medicine. She highlights the lifelong friendships she has made through the program.
What is your current career or educational program?
Currently, I work at the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science at the University of Nottingham in the UK.
Describe what you do.
I teach undergraduate vet students in a variety of subject areas, but primarily my work involves small group teaching in clinical pathology and evidence-based veterinary medicine. I also supervise graduate students at Master’s degree level.
What has been your journey, since graduating from the BMLSc Program?
After graduating from the BMLSc program I worked as a teaching technologist in the BMLSc program for five years. From there I attended vet school at the University of Guelph in Ontario. After graduating I moved to England and worked in mixed, rural clinical practice in Derbyshire. In 2007-8 I completed a Master’s degree in Veterinary Epidemiology from the Royal Veterinary College and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. I have worked with a national UK animal charity called Cats Protection in various capacities: providing clinical services as a private practitioner, as Head of Veterinary Services from 2003 – 2005, and as Field Veterinary Officer from 2009-2018. I have also worked at the Royal Veterinary College as a research associate for various contract research projects. In 2018, I joined the team at the University of Nottingham School of Veterinary Medicine and Science.
How did your BMLSc degree help you to get where you are now?
The BMLSc program laid the foundation for all of my future learning and instilled in me a love of learning that has been with me throughout my career.
What is the most valuable experience you gained from the BMLSc Program?
The most valuable experience I gained as a student in the BMLSc program was a solid understanding of a broad range of key medical and scientific concepts, from both theoretical and practical perspectives.
What did you enjoy most about the program or what is your favorite memory from your time in the Program?
What I enjoyed most about the program was the people and the sense of family that was fostered by Dr. Phil Reid, the Director. It’s 30 years on and I am still friends with fellow students and staff.
What is one piece of advice that you would give to BMLSc students and recent graduates?
I would say that the BMLSc program will expand your mind and open many doors for you – use this unique experience to develop a rewarding life and career. And keep in touch with your friends!! 😊

One thing on my bucket list is to visit all 7 continents.
