Dr. Coupland is the Regional Medical Director of Vancouver Coastal Laboratories and the Site Medical Director for Pathology and Laboratory Medicine clinical services at Vancouver General Hospital and the UBC Hospital.Dr. Coupland has been the Regional Medical Laboratory Directory for Vancouver Coastal Health since 2006.After receiving his MD from the University of Alberta, he completed hematological and anatomical pathology residency training at UBC followed by a two year fellowship in hematopathology at the NIH in Bethesda Maryland.Over the years, Dr. Coupland has held clinical and administrative roles in teaching and community hospitals across the lower mainland, including St. Paul’s Hospital, the BC Cancer Agency and Surrey Memorial Hospital, as well as, in Philadelphia’s Temple University Hospital and the Cross Cancer Center in Edmonton.He is a clinical professor at UBC.His current interests include quality management, professional quality, error prevention, ethics, laboratory process improvement and laboratory utilization on the administrative side.Clinically he continues to practices as a general hematopathologist.
