Teaching Interest

My activities centre around my expertise in Dermatopathology, the study of histopathology as it correlates with clinical Dermatology. Most of my time and energy is directed towards teaching residents and at continuing medical education events. Medical students represent about 10% of my teaching activity. My primary philosophy of teaching is that a trainee learns best through practical experience. As an internationally recognized expert dermatopathologist with more case-load experience than anyone else in Vancouver Coastal Health, I offer unique value and provide trainees with a practical approach to the real-life situations they will face. Trainees perform best when they know that their skills will be evaluated, so I incorporate testing into my teaching. Anatomical Pathology is primarily a visual specialty, so I incorporate  visual images into my teaching as much as possible. My research focuses on clinical case series and identifying new histologic clues to the diagnosis of skin disease.
