Dr Gordon Hoag received his BSc (Hon) and MSc from the University of Saskatchewan (U of S) and his PhD from the University of Guelph and practiced briefly as a clinical chemist. He then obtained his MD from U of S. After completing his fellowship in General Pathology, he practiced as a clinical pathologist with Island Medical Laboratories in Victoria BC and with the MDS / Metro Victoria. He was a founding member of the Victoria Lipid Clinic which was established in 1989 and he continues to practice in this medical setting. At the American Hospital in Dubai, he established the hospital to American standards. Due to his experience with the Diagnostic Accreditation Program (DAP) in BC, the hospital achieved College of American Pathologist Accreditation. The American Hospital was the first Middle East institution to receive CAP Laboratory Accreditation as a private hospital and the first ever to receive JCIA Accreditation as a hospital. His most recent role is as the Medical Director, Laboratory Medicine, Pathology and Medical Genetics at Island Health.

Dr Hoag has served as an executive member in professional associations in Canada, provincially as president of the BCALP, and nationally as president of CAP. He is presently co-chair of the Shared Care Committee Collaborative of the Doctors of BC and the Ministry of Health. He has been appointed to regional, national, and international advisory boards of pharmaceutical and medical device corporations. He has also served as a member on both regional and international advisory boards of laboratory instrument companies.

Dr Hoag’s major medical interests are lipid disorders, protein chemistry and more recently, the role of laboratory medicine chronic disease management. He has participated in over 15 clinical trials as principal investigator and collaborated with industry in evaluating new tests and their impact on clinical care. He has published over 40 articles in peer reviewed journals and presented over 70 abstracts at national and international meetings. In two cases, he received recognition at international meetings for the best poster. He is known as an innovator of medical practice models and contributor to a patient-centered focus to health care.
