Entrance Requirements

Eligible applicants must meet the general admission requirements of UBC and complete ALL of the prerequisite courses (or be in the process of completing them at the time of application) from one of the two entry categories listed below.  Please note that meeting the admission criteria does not imply or guarantee admission.

Students enter the BMLSc Program at Year 3 and complete two years of study.

If you are an undergraduate student or a degree holder and considering applying to the BMLSc Program, ALL of the following courses must be completed by April of the year for which you are applying for September entry:

**Analytical Chemistry (CHEM 211) is a prerequisite for UBC CHEM 311, a required course in year 3 of BMLSc. Applicants who have not completed UBC CHEM 211 or an equivalent course at another institution CANNOT be considered for admission.
*** Arts electives: Includes most humanities and social science subject areas offered by the Faculty of Arts, excluding ENGL courses used to satisfy the first-year English requirement.


If you are a registered medical laboratory technologist, or have equivalent foreign training, you must complete all of the following prior to entry:

  • Diploma from a Canadian Medical Association accredited MLT program and Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Technologists (CSMLS) certification (or an equivalent international qualification)
  • Second-year courses:
    • Organic Chemistry (UBC CHEM 233 & 235 (or CHEM 203 & 204 or CHEM 203 & 213 & 245)
    • Physical Chemistry (UBC CHEM 205 or 201)
    • Analytical Chemistry (UBC CHEM 211)
